"I'll see you later," Issac said as he stood on the threshold of her front door.
"You can come in, if you want," she responded, stepping back so he could see the inside of her flat.
Indecision warred over his face as he tried to decide whether he was going to or not.
"Are you sure?"
She nodded. "I don't have any beer or anything, but I can make a pot of tea for us and have some great biscuits my Mum sent." She really should remember to call her and thank her for the sweet treats. She kept meaning to, but other things got in the way.
Then again, it might be better to hold off until she had mating news for her Mum. Then she wouldn't have to lie when she asked when Cassie planned on settling down.
"That sounds good," Issac responded. "But only if you're certain."
"I am," she returned, almost annoyed that he wasn't just taking her up on the offer. Surely he was supposed to jump every time she wanted to spend time with him. She chided herself for that thought. She shouldn't insist on how people felt around her. Particularly not one of her mates.
"Are you always this tidy?" His eyes trailed over the neatly organised living room.
She gave a short laugh. "I'm not tidy at all. I just have the advantage of having this." She held up her hand and watched as red sparks danced around her fingers.
"Much easier than having to draw blood to do magic," he observed.
"I imagine so." They stared at each other, neither one of them able to break the tension between them. "Tea!" she exclaimed.
"Two sugars? If that's okay?"
"I think I have some, I'm not sure." She turned and headed towards the small kitchen, intent on doing as she'd promised and make tea. All the while hoping she had some sugar left over from the last time she'd done some baking.
"Are you okay with going back to work tomorrow?" Issac leaned against her kitchen door, looking completely at home in her flat. That was something she could get used to, but knew was impractical. With three mates, her flat would quickly become far too small for them, and she wouldn't pretend otherwise.
"No," she admitted as she flicked the kettle on. "I'm terrified. Michael has been my boss for as long as I've been there. He has weird moments, but I can't imagine him doing anything this bad."
"Maybe he didn't?" His voice shook, revealing just how little he believed that.
"I doubt the DNA is lying," she countered. "He did this. And he gave me the blood anyway. Did he want me to work out what it was?"
"Why would he want that?" Issac asked.
"Maybe to trick me into revealing I'm more than just human myself?" She shook even as she considered what that could mean. Would she have ended up being his next victim? As dead and haunted as Tyann was.
Issac stepped forward and wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close and stroking her hair. "It's okay.
